At her interview, the woman wears a pantsuit and has her hair tied back. It is her third interview to discuss the same position. She sits and leans forward, smiling, her lipstick a professional nude. A panel of four give her a sheet of paper that lists different nouns. They ask which value on the sheet best describes her. She looks at the panel, vaguely eye-level, and lies, saying what she thinks will seem most impressive from a person her age. She says, ‘Self-respect.’

There is a young woman, more of a girl, straight out of high school, interviewing with her. The girl hesitates for a moment, then says, ‘Empathy.’ She just loves people. The woman feels this is a better answer, so she announces that she also knows the NATO phonetic alphabet. The girl replies, ‘Alfa. Bravo. Charlie.’ They are both hired.

They are walked around the floor and introduced to the fire wardens, are told the number to dial for first aid and what to do if someone calls in and says they have planted a bomb in the building. There is a surprising number of things to do if someone calls in and says there is a bomb in the building, partly because it is a large building.

It was not called a call centre in the job listing or the woman’s interview, but after the woman gets the position everyone calls it the call centre because that’s exactly what it is.

The call centre is on the seventh floor of a concrete office building. A swipe card gives access to the elevators and the women’s bathroom. The centre itself is twenty desks, open plan, with old Cisco telephones, headsets and fluorescent lighting. On her first day she notices a poster on the window behind her supervisor’s desk. It says, ‘Don’t Jump,’ but then, after six months, the girl from the interview swipes her swipe card and takes the elevator to the roof. She jumps. The poster is quietly taken down.
